Can stainless steel be attracted by magnets
In the state of ordinary plate or rolled plate, if it has not been deeply processed, it will not be attracted by the magnet. However, if after deep drawing, some parts of 304 will be transformed into martensite structure, showing tiny magnetism, it may be attracted by the magnet. Therefore, if the plate can be absorbed by the magnet, it must not be 304. If the product can be absorbed by the magnet, it must not be demagnetized. Iron and nickel can be absorbed by magnet. If a stainless steel product can be absorbed, the content of iron and nickel is very high. This kind of stainless steel products have good corrosion resistance, because the stainless steel mainly comes from chromium. But it's cheaper and more durable. However, the quality of stainless steel can not be identified only by iron absorption stone, some inferior stainless steel products are mixed with a large amount of manganese. Manganese can't be absorbed by magnet, but the rust resistance and corrosion resistance of the product decrease a lot after adding manganese. This kind of product can't be absorbed by magnet, but its quality is very poor. There are two kinds of solid structure of iron, one is face centered cubic, called austenite, the other is body centered cubic, called ferrite. Ordinary steel is ferrite at room temperature and can be absorbed by magnets. There are many kinds of stainless steel, the most common one is austenitic stainless steel containing chromium and nickel, such as 0Cr18Ni9, which contains 18% chromium and 9% nickel. The magnetic property of this kind of stainless steel is very weak. The chromium stainless steel without nickel or low nickel is usually martensitic stainless steel, such as Cr12. They are magnetic and have less corrosion resistance than austenitic stainless steel. In recent years, due to the soaring price of nickel, we ask some poor manufacturers to replace the inferior with the good, and use martensitic stainless steel instead of austenitic stainless steel. Therefore, we can take a Nd-Fe-B magnet to check the stainless steel. What we can absorb is definitely not a good stainless steel.
